M17 International Art Collectors’ Forum is a forum organized by the M17 Contemporary Art Center and the Ukrainian Club of Contemporary Art Collectors in partnership with the Modern Art Research Institute of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine and as part of the project An Open Opportunity: Ukrainian Contemporary Art from Private Collections.

The Forum will be held at the M17 CAC from July 7 to 10, 2021.

More about Day I speakers:

Nicolas Liucci-Goutnikov, PhD in philosophy of art, curator at the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and responsible for the museum’s scientific coordination. Participated in the commission for the selection of Ukrainian contemporary art for the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou.

Oleksandr Soloviov, one of the most Ukrainian’s reputable art historians and art critics, curator of the project An Open Opportunity at the M17 Contemporary Art Center, Curator of Contemporary Art at Mystetskyi Arsenal. Worked as a curator at the PinchukArtCentre. Curated the Ukrainian pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2003, 2007 and 2013. He was the organizer of many exhibitions and large-scale projects, among which the ART-KYIV Contemporary annual forum, Independent group exhibition and The First / The Second Kyiv International Biennale of Contemporary Art ARSENALE at Mystetskyi Arsenal. Participated in the experts’ sessions for the selection of Ukrainian contemporary art for the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou.

Emine Dzhaparova, the current First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Crimean Tatar politician and stateswoman, journalist. In 2015–2016, she was the Advisor to Minister on Crimean information policy, and from 2016 to 2019, she was the First Deputy Minister of Information Policy of Ukraine.

Nathalie Beras, advisor on cooperation and cultural activity of the Embassy of France in Ukraine, Director of the Institut français d’Ukraine.

Viktoria Bavykina, Candidate of Sociological Sciences (PhD), curator, art historian. Curator of the Grynyov Art Collection, member of the Expert Council for Contemporary Art of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine. Curator of the project An Open Opportunity at the M17 Contemporary Art Center. Participated in the experts’ sessions for the selection of Ukrainian contemporary art for the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou. She also was the curator of the international KHARKIV PHOTO FORUM, co-curator of the exhibition Instant Time at Mystetskyi Arsenal and many other projects.

Yuriy Kogutiak, collector, philanthropist, Chairman of the Board and founding member of the Ukrainian Club of Contemporary Art Collectors, founder of the Kogutiak Foundation. He started to actively collect art in the early 2000s and to date has become an owner of one of the brightest collections of Ukrainian contemporary art. A substantial part of the collection is devoted to Ukrainian art of the 1950s – 1970s. And Oleksandr Roytburd’s collected works, which are part of Kogutiak’s collection, are the largest existing gathering.

Zenko Aftanaziv, collector, philanthropist, founding member of the Ukrainian Club of Contemporary Art Collectors, founder of the Zenko Foundation. He actively supports international communications in the arts and culture by working to build a positive image of the country, increase interest in modern Ukrainian culture and develop cultural diplomacy. Among the landmark projects of the Zenko Foundation are the Permanent Revolution (including the exhibition at the Ludwig Museum, Cologne, Germany, and the book of the same name by Alisa Lozhkina), the exhibition I Am a Drop in the Ocean. Art of the Ukrainian Revolution (Vienna Künstlerhaus exhibition complex, Austria) ​and many others.

Vadym Morokhovskyy, collector, member of the Ukrainian Club of Contemporary Art Collectors, Honored Economist of Ukraine, founder of The Museum of Odesa Modern Art (2008). The MSMO foundation includes over 1 600 pieces of art by leading Odesa artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The focus of Vadym Morokhovskyy’s personal collection is on the works by modern Odesa artists of the first decades of the 20th century, especially by Mykhailo Zhuk. The ultimate purpose of collecting art, in the view of the collector, is to create a new society through education.

Borys Grynyov, collector, philanthropist, member of the Ukrainian Club of Contemporary Art Collectors, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, founder of the Grynyov Art Collection. Grynyov’s collection consists of more than 3 000 works, including the art of the first half of the 20th century (representatives of socialist realism, constructivist art, Boychukists), Ukrainian unofficial art of the 1960s – mid-1980s and the transformative period between the 1980s and mid-1990s. The Kharkiv School of Photography also constitutes an important element in the collection.

Edward Clarke, PhD, an art history, architecture and English literature teacher at various colleges and the Department for Continuing Education, Oxford University, an art critic and poet. Now, another book by Edward Clarke is forthcoming. The Secret Mind of Art will present the outcome of the exploration of 12 classical works of religious art. The launch of the book is scheduled for 2023 at Lion Books. And in the summer of 2021, the M17 Contemporary Art Center, together with Cherwell College Oxford, where Edward teaches Art History A-level, is organizing Clarke’s lecture series for the Ukrainian audience called An Initiation into the Mysteries of Western Art.

  • 3 p.m. Peter Doroshenko: “Moving Beyond the Ego and Money, the Future of Private Collections” lecture

Peter Doroshenko, a well-known Ukrainian-born American curator, the Executive Director at Dallas Contemporary, USA. Author of the book Private Spaces for Contemporary Art about art collectors who have chosen to take their private collections public and to create their own private spaces for their artworks. He was a Brown Foundation research fellow at Maison de Dora Maar (Ménerbes, France). From 2003 to 2005, he was the Artistic Director of the City Museum for Contemporary Art in Ghent, Belgium (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, S.M.A.K.). He also held director and curator positions in several other institutions representing contemporary art: the INOVA (Institute of Visual Arts) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, USA. Former President and Art Director of the PinchukArtCentre.

  • 5 p.m. Viktor Misiano, Oleksandr Soloviov: “The Collector: Between Curator and Artist” talk

Viktor Misiano, curator, art theorist. Founder and editor-in-chief of Moscow Art Magazine dedicated to contemporary art issues. From 1980 till 1990 he was a curator of contemporary art at the Pushkin National Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, from 1992 to 1997 he was a curator at the Soros Center for Contemporary Art in Moscow. From 2010 to 2014 he was a Chairman of the International Foundation Manifesta (Amsterdam). Founder and first editor-in-chief of the international Manifesta Journal: Journal of Contemporary Curatorship (Amsterdam). He was the curator of the Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1995 and 2003, and in 2005, he curated the first Central Asian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. A three times winner of the Innovation Prize (Russia) in the categories of “Curatorial Project” (2006, 2011, 2016). In 2016, he won the Kandinsky Prize in the nomination “Scholarly work. History and theory of contemporary art” and the Igor Zabel Award for Culture and Theory. Among other things, Misiano curated art exhibitions in Austria, Italy, France, Turkey, Brazil and other countries. Author of numerous articles and two monographs “Other” and Divers (NLO, 2004), Five Lectures on Curatorship (Ad Marginem, 2015), editor of art catalogues.

Viktor Korsak, collector and founder of The Korsak’s Museum of Ukrainian Modern Art in Lutsk, Ukraine. The museum complex features works by more than 100 prominent Ukrainian artists, a total of more than 800 objects of painting, graphics, sculpture, installations, video art from the mid-20th century to the present.

Alain Servais, Belgian businessman and collector with almost 25 years of experience. He was one of the first who started collecting digital art and supporting young digital artists by offering a residency program in his The Loft artspace in Brussels. Alain spends most of his leisure time visiting museums, biennials, galleries and art fairs for sharing his knowledge of art then, inter alia. He opened The Loft in 2000. There, he holds annual exhibitions of works from the Servais Family Collection. The collection has one notable distinction: there are no paintings.

  • 5 p.m. Anders Petterson: “The Future of Art Collecting: New Models and Motivations” lecture

Anders Petterson, a leading authority on the art market, a pioneer in developing data, new research reports and analytical tools for the area. A founder and Managing Director of ArtTactic, a London-based art market research and advisory company set up in 2001. Anders is lecturing on the topic of “Art as an Asset Class” for the Sotheby’s Institute of Art and CASS Business School in London and IESA in Paris. He is a board member of the non-profit organization Professional Advisors to the International Art Market (PAIAM). Upon Petterson’s initiative, in collaboration with ArtTactic, such important publications for the art industry as Hiscox Online Art Trade Report, NextGen Artists Global Report, TEFAF Art Dealer Finance are produced.

Speakers:

Elena Zavelev, founder and CEO of CADAF, the world’s first Crypto and Digital Art Fair. Founder and CEO of the New Art Academy, an educational resource on high-tech art, blockchain and artificial intelligence for the global art market. Elena consulted many art businesses on marketing strategy and content, including 1stDibs, Collectrium (Christie’s Auction House) and Skate’s Art Market Research. She is an author of articles on the synthesis of art and new technologies for Forbes and Observer Media Group.

Michael Tsarev, collector, philanthropist, founding member of the Ukrainian Club of Contemporary Art Collectors, founder of the Michael Tsarev Art Collection. His collection’s speciality is having lots of objects that are still perceived as “unconventional” artworks for collecting: installations, video art. Michael Tsarev is also the founder and ideologist of the LINOLEUM Contemporary Animation and Media Art Festival. Furthermore, he was behind the founding of the Moscow Contemporary Art Collectors Club.

Aida Dzhangirova, Managing Partner and Curator of Blockchain Art Hackathon, an international project that provides opportunities for artists to display their own vision of innovative technologies through the creation of art objects. Blockchain Art Hackathon brings together artists, IT professionals, economists and business people to develop the Blockchain culture.

Denis Chistyakov, collector, NFT market expert.

Ivan Podmasko (Synoptic), lawyer, an expert in digital law, blockchain and venture projects, Metaverse researcher. He built an observatory in Decentraland and a gallery in Cryptovoxels virtual world. Creator and collector of digital art.

Alistair Hicks, writer, art curator. For 20 years, he was the Senior Curator of the Deutsche Bank collection, one of the most significant corporate collections of post-1945 drawings and photographs in the world. Author of the famous research paper The Global Art Compass: New Directions in 21st Century Art. Also a reviewer of art for The Times and The Financial Times, Apollo Magazine, Frieze Magazine, The Spectator, Vogue. His latest book Istanbul by Its Artists will be published by Yapı Kredi Yayınları this year. In 2022 he will be curating an exhibition of Paula Rego at the Pera Museum (Istanbul, Turkey).

Claire Staebler, art historian, art critic, curator of the Louis Vuitton Foundation. Was a curator at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris from 2002 to 2007 and Artistic Director at the PinchukArtCenter from 2007 to 2009. She also works as a freelance curator on international projects and art critic for various magazines such as Zérodeux (France), Version (France and Romania), IDEA (Romania), l’Officiel Art.

  • 4 p.m. Caroline Douglas, Bertrand Coste: “Private Philanthropy in Service to Public Collections. Contemporary Art Society in London” talk

Caroline Douglas, Director of the Contemporary Art Society (CAS) in London, a charity that purchases important works of art to place in public collections across the UK. She previously headed the Arts Council Collection (2006–2013), curating solo shows with artists such as Bridget Riley, Anish Kapoor and Gary Hume. As a curator of the Visual Arts Department of the British Council (from the early 1990s to 2006), she worked on touring exhibitions in Europe and India, as well as leading on purchases for the collection.

Bertrand Coste – Golden Patron, member of the Development Council of the Contemporary Art Society in London. Head of the Search Foundation, he finances the research group of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the field of Eneolithic research in Eastern Europe, which has brought Ukrainian archaeology to the world level. Descendant and follower of the traditions of the de Menil family, who were ardent supporters and advocates of modern art.

Speakers:

Andrii Adamovskiy – philanthropist, a member of the Ukrainian Club of Contemporary Art Collectors. His collection of works by Ukrainian and Russian artists of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries is considered one of the largest in Ukraine. In 2010, Adamovskiy founded the Ukrainian Avant-Garde Foundation. And in 2018 he founded his own Adamovskiy Foundation, whose activities are aimed at preserving and studying the cultural heritage of Ukraine and Eastern Europe. In 2010, he initiated the establishment of the M17 Contemporary Art Center in order to infuse fresh ideas into the art of Ukraine and acquaint Ukrainian society with leading world trends. He is currently the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Center. In 2019, with a special commitment to modern sculpture, Andriy Adamovskiy supported the idea of ​​establishing the first in Ukraine professional award for sculptors M17 Sculpture Prize, which is held on the basis of CAC M17.

Vladimir Spielvogel – philanthropist, a member of the Ukrainian Club of Contemporary Art Collectors. His collection includes about 200 items, most of which date from the 2000s to the present day. Much of the work relates to abstract expressionism and neo-expressionism.

Zenko Aftanaziv, collector, philanthropist, founding member of the Ukrainian Club of Contemporary Art Collectors, founder of the Zenko Foundation. He actively supports international communications in the arts and culture by working to build a positive image of the country, increase interest in modern Ukrainian culture and develop cultural diplomacy. Yuri Komelkov – publisher, gallery owner, collector. Head and co-owner of CULTPROSTIR.UA, author of the project «UKRAINE. THE BEST», owner of the publishing house «ATLANT-UMS». His collection includes about 1,000 works by contemporary Ukrainian artists.

07/09/2021 The Pompidou Center is organizing a show of modern Ukrainian art – Left-bank Kyiv.

The Pompidou Center in Paris has planned a Ukrainian art show. Nicolas Lucci-Gutnikov, the Center's curator, discussed this during the opening of the M17 International Art Collectors'Forum in Kyiv. The exhibition's formal dates have yet to be set, and there is no information about it on the institution's website. However, according to the curator, the exhibition will take place in 2022 - specifically, Lucci-Gutnikov promised to do everything possible to hold the exhibition before the Pompidou Center closes for a three-year restoration, which is scheduled for the end of 2023.

07/13/2021 "Ukraine in Pompidou": Everything You Need to Know About the Ukrainian Contemporary Art Exhibition in France In 2022, at the Pompidou Center - Buro 24/7

The Pompidou Center and the M17 Contemporary Art Center in Kyiv formally announced on July 7, 2021, the exhibition "Ukraine in Pompidou" - an exhibition of Ukrainian contemporary art from the 1960s to the present - which will be presented in France in 2022. The Ukrainian Club of Contemporary Art Collectors initiated the "Ukraine in Pompidou" initiative, which aims to reform cultural policy and integrate Ukraine into the global cultural framework.

Висока білявка, володарка модельної зовнішності і м'якої посмішки, вона особисто зустрічає гостей: проводить екскурсії, спілкується із партнерами, дає інтерв'ю телеканалам. Наталія прийшла на роботу в М17 десять років тому як піар-директорка: пропрацювавши три роки, пішла, а в 2018-му повернулася і займалася перезапуском артцентру вже з новою командою.
