Artist talk with Anatoly Kryvolap and presentation of the catalogue

18.04.2024

On April 16, a meeting with artist Anatoly Kryvolap and art historian, curator of the exhibition “Foretypes” Valeriy Sakharuk was held at the M17 Contemporary Art Center. The meeting was moderated by Natalia Shpytkovska, director of the M17 CAC.

The catalogue of the exhibition ‘Foretypes’ is available for purchase at the link.

The video of the catalogue presentation is available at the following link.

The event featured a presentation of the catalogue “Foretypes” by the curator of the exhibition Valeriy Sakharuk. The printed edition has become a further addition to the exhibition project at M17.

“Those who come over to the exhibition will not find Kryvolap here. Indeed, there is another Kryvolap here: first and foremost, because it is the first time that abstraction and icon are combined here, with an attempt to justify this combination. We did not mix them together, it is a space within a space. The icon itself is on a yellow, golden background, with red, blue, and everything around it. Above all, there is a different Kryvolap here, but Kryvolap no less interesting, and perhaps more controversial, than the one everyone is used to: the landscapes, the Ukrainian motifs. This art exhibition is for reflection, for comparison, and for understanding that there is something else,” stated Valeriy Sakharuk during the meeting on 16 April.

“It appears to me that abstraction is one of the forms of perception and self-expression, so it is no coincidence that Malevich once wrote a book on how to perceive his abstraction, and Kandinsky described how to perceive his musical images in abstraction. These are systems that are a theoretical explanation. The catalogue and the exhibition “Foretypes” are completely different components that complement each other. The catalogue contains almost all the bright colours I have worked with. This is what makes it a kind of system of signs and intense emotions. Pure paint is a pure emotion, just like pure sound,” noted the artist Anatoly Kryvolap during the event.

The catalogue is currently available for purchase at the M17 CAC and through the online store at the link.

The exhibition will run at the M17 Contemporary Art Center until 09 June 2024.
