The exhibition “I am a problem here.?” is open at the M17 CAC!

15.11.2025

On October 16, 2025, M17 Contemporary Art Center opened the exhibition project “I am a problem here.?”. The exhibition brings together contemporary Ukrainian women artists from different generations and regions, both those who remain in Ukraine and those who now reside abroad.

The project explores the experiences of women in today’s reality and within the context of war, as well as the challenges surrounding their presence in society and culture today. The exhibition project is curated by Maria Kulikovska.

“This exhibition is about the inner, emotional state — about fragility and vulnerability, yet also about strength, resilience, and the ability to continue living. It is a collective whisper about something personal, dense, embodied: like soft skin and fur, like fragile earthen clay, born from an honest perception of the world. It does not seek to answer the question of who suffers more.

It is not about confrontation, but about the intimate, the unspoken — what is often hard to voice aloud. Fleshly, bodily, uncomfortable, yet real. Something that remains painfully relevant.” – Maria Kulikovska, curator of the “I am a problem here.?” exhibition project

“This is not our first collaboration with Maria Kulikovska — previously she took part in the M17 exhibitions as an artist. We are delighted she has responded to our invitation to curate and to create the first exhibition at M17 composed entirely of women’s voices.

For us, it is important to emphasise: we do not single out artists by gender or grant women a ‘special status’. We implemented this project because we believe that a female perspective allows us to see the situation, emotions, and vulnerability differently. It is a way of speaking about the present not through facts and numbers, not through the chronicle of events we encounter in the news, but through the experiences, expressions, and testimonies of women artists.” – Natalia Shpytkovska, Director of M17 Contemporary Art Center
