About the artwork

Ilya Chichkan’s work traditionally balances between absurdity, irony and deep conceptuality, playing on the symbols of modernism and the avant-garde. The image of a beaver is combined with the symbol of the famous work of art ‘Black Square’ by Kazimir Malevich. The artist thus creates a satirical and provocative interpretation of the classic work.

‘Yolks, sticks, dense forest,
Our dear Malevich’.
Ilya Chichkan, artist, author of the work ‘Beaver’, presented at the ‘Resilience Formula’ at the M17 Contemporary Art Center.

Chychkan is an artist who often uses humour and irony in his work, tools that often become a way for many Ukrainians to build resilience.
