Malashchuk Yarema and Khimei Roman
Dedicated to the Youth of the World II-III is a reenactment of Malashchuk and Khimei’s 2019 film of the same name, which documented the rave Сxema in Kyiv. In September 2023, the artists reenacted the party against the backdrop of wartime reality, focusing on a new generation of community members who replaced the original rave-goers after the long Covid-19 pandemic and the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The project captures a novel reality that has since emerged — a “new day” no one could have imagined in their wildest dreams just four years ago.
Yarema Malashchuk and Roman Khimei are a Ukrainian artist duo working with video, installation, and performance. Formed in 2013, their practice explores notions of community, ritual, national identity, and collective memory. They combine cinematic language with documentary approaches to build multi-layered narratives that often balance between reality and artistic construction.
Their works have been shown at the Venice Biennale, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, M HKA (Belgium), Museum Folkwang (Germany), and within such festivals as Docudays UA, KISFF, and DOK Leipzig. They are recipients of the PinchukArtCentre Prize (2020), the Kazimir Malevich Prize (2022), and alumni of programs such as Gaude Polonia and other international residencies.
Yarema Malashchuk was born in 1993 in Kolomyia. He studied at the Kyiv National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television named after Karpenko-Karyi, and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (ASP).
Roman Khimei was born in 1992 in Ivano-Frankivsk. He studied at the Kyiv National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television named after Karpenko-Karyi.
