About the artwork

Everything Must Go is a project that takes the form of a video and sound fieldwork across several flea markets and one mega market in Ukraine. The title borrows its meaning from a term used by US stores that are going out of business and need all inventory to be cleared out.

Serving as a metaphor for the structural and societal clearing out in Post-Soviet Ukraine, Everything Must Go explores historic memory, nationhood, and social relations affected by newly unleashed free market forces

Date of birth:
Place of residence:

Slinko is a multidisciplinary artist based in the United States who grew up in Ukraine. Blending an interest in history with personal inquiry, she examines how power shapes lived experience and how personal agency may be reclaimed from systems of abstraction. Informed by scholarship on labor, extraction, and ideology, she draws inspiration from everyday people, places, and material culture.

Over the last four years, Slinko has increasingly centered her practice on her native Donbas, a border region on the frontlines of the current war in Ukraine. Her current focus is on the legacies of heavy resource extraction in Eastern Ukraine, which continue to shape its cultural heritage and identity.

Slinko positions her work toward cultural reconstruction and remediation in response to colonial, military, and ecological abuse of her homeland, pursuing forms of repair grounded in historical memory and material investigation.
