Hrynko Kate
Conducting experiments with frozen natural objects and colored ice at home throughout 2023, I noticed that a small amount of ice placed in a silicone mold completely disappeared, leaving only molecules of paint and a photographic object. The experiments continued into 2024. To continue my work during emergency power outages, the freezer was connected to a generator. This allowed me to preserve my works and create new ones.
Investigating the possible causes of ice disappearance, I discovered that this phenomenon is known as sublimation, when ice transforms directly into water vapor (gas) without the typical melting process. This sublimation process occurs in frost-free refrigerators at home. Intrigued by this observation, I delved into the natural processes of ice sublimation, discovering that in nature, this is called evaporation, when ice and snow turn directly into water vapor.
This natural phenomenon, like its counterpart in domestic settings, significantly impacts the global climate by affecting the albedo of the Earth’s surface, which is determined by the amount of ice and snow present on the surface. Through my observations and research into the physics governing the transformation of water states, I began to create ice pieces designed to disappear under various physical states and temperature conditions. I capture images of these ephemeral artworks, which, by their nature, exist only briefly before evaporating or melting.

“Photography and painting are the main means through which I express my artistic vision. I use photography to capture fleeting moments. I apply paint to my work by hand to show texture, depth, and expression. Colors, with their endless range of shades, become the driving force of my artistic language, allowing me to communicate on a level that goes beyond words. In my works, I explore human emotional states and the combination of art and science.”
