About the artwork

The title of my project refers to the film “Portrait Against the Mountains” by Maksym Rudenko (2019). This film is about Paraska Plytka-Horytsvit and her artistic work — and so is my project. It is based on the contours of Paraska’s paper cuttings, enlarged and filled with color. This is already the second such house. The first one was created in August in the Carpathians, near the place where she lived. It was a theatre camp for adults called “Stezhka”, where the main research themes were “earth” and “home”. There, the image of a house appeared — one that moves with the wind and has no solid walls, like a dream, elusive and transparent.

I really wanted to tell people about Paraska Plytka-Horytsvit’s art and make them fall in love with her. The audio is taken from the documentary “The World of Paraska Horytsvit” by Pavlo Feranyuk (1992). Read about Paraska’s life and her strength, see what she created, visit the mountains — the Carpathians and Kryvorivnia — and discover the artists in your own region. It feels like returning home and rediscovering the essential seeds and roots from which we can continue to grow and explore the world.

I would like to thank Maria and Alina, who created “Stezhka” and who research Ukrainian artists, especially Paraska, as well as the projects Audiostories and Jahorysvit. Thank you for our collaboration.
