About the artwork

“Metadata” is an installation that explores memory in the context of war and everyday instability. The project unfolds within a cold space in Kyiv, where low temperature is not a metaphor but a direct consequence of damaged infrastructure.

The room, lined with thermal foil, functions as an environment designed to preserve warmth. A grain placed at the center of the space appears as a minimal carrier of memory — fragile and easily lost. A flash drive connected to an unknown object leads to a monitor displaying a video sequence in which the archive of Instytut Avtomatyky — a cultural space that has existed for more than six years — merges with artificially generated visual fragments and mythologized imagery.

The installation captures a condition in which memory is neither stable nor reliable. It oscillates between document and fiction, between what is preserved and what is lost. In this context, working with archives emerges not only as a process of preserving the past, but also as a form of resistance in circumstances where reality itself remains under constant threat.

Created in collaboration with Andrii Pidlisnyi within the program of the Instytut Avtomatyky collective.

INSTYTUT AVTOMATYKY
Date of birth: 2020
Place of residence: Kyiv, Kyiv Institute of Automation

Instytut Avtomatyky is an artist-led initiative operating as an experimental creative laboratory. Avoiding mimetic approaches to expression in contemporary art, the group focuses on experience, work with unconventional materials, engagement with space, and the use of found objects (readymades).

Instytut Avtomatyky was founded on July 20, 2020, by artists Maksym Mazur and Andrii Pidlisnyi in the building of the Kyiv Institute of Automation at 22 Nahirna Street, where an artistic community and creative hub emerged.

Among the group’s priorities are the creation of exhibition projects and artistic events, as well as the development of international collaborations between artists based on shared artistic principles.

Instytut Avtomatyky operates beyond the framework of a fixed exhibition format and employs a collective curatorial practice that involves the participants of each project.
