About the artwork

The VR project is based on the audio diaries of a writer and academic John Hull. In 1983, after a gradual worsening of his vision, the author became completely blind. John Hull began to make a diary on audio tapes to help him understand the turmoil in life. For three years, he recorded over sixteen hours of material – a unique testimony of loss, rebirth and renewal that shows blindness from within. Blind Notes: In the Dark is a study of cognitive and emotional experience. Each scene is about the memory, moment and specific location of John’s audio diary. Binaural audio and 3D animation are immersed in the “world out of sight” in real-time.

VR experience is part of a project that also includes the film Blindness Notes by Peter Middleton and James Spinney.
