About the artwork

Sculptural objects peer into the subconscious and create their own material dimension, where recognizable industrial elements of rocket structures are woven into organic forms. The objectivity of memory is questioned, subjective distortion under the influence of experience takes over. The ceramic material refers to a domestic, archaic narrative; a body that belonged to a part of the landscape, and is now memorialized.

Alisa Kulesh
Date of birth: 2002
Place of residence: Kyiv

Alisa Kulesh was born in 2002 in Kyiv. In 2022, after the start of the full-scale invasion, she immigrated to Germany and began her studies at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts. Alisa’s practice unfolds at the intersection of war memory, material transformation and bodily vulnerability. She is interested in forms that are affective carriers of experience and combine personal and collective narratives on their surface.

An important dimension of Alisa Kulesh’s work concerns the material conditions of memory and the circulation of images of violence: their institutionalization, commercialization, domestication or being part of the natural landscape.
