Turliun Tamara
This work reflects a sense of oneness and, at the same time, difference. “For me, my mother is the woman I compare myself to — someone I look up to. At times, in a hairstyle, in a phrase, while flipping through old family albums, I notice the resemblance.
Today, I encounter her in a photograph — and next to her, I see myself. One of the images captures her fiftieth birthday — a large bouquet of roses. Later, I realized: even if I were to draw closer, she would always remain ahead of me. Time carries her further away, and we never truly grow closer,” says the artist.
Tamara Turliun (born 1995, Ukraine) graduated from the Faculty of Monumental Painting at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv) and is an alumna of KAMA (Kyiv). She works across graphics, painting, video, mosaic, and sculpture, and also teaches.
In the artistic world of Turliun, there are no human politics, hierarchies, or instruments of control that would simplify reading her works within the familiar framework of an anthropocentric system. In the ecosystem she depicts, all beings are focused on maintaining a delicate balance of coexistence. These creatures may appear naïve, disguised as simple mythical characters — but only to mislead the viewer and resist interpretation for as long as possible. The only one allowed to notice and record their presence, without breaking the rules of this world, is the artist herself.
