Ukrainian modernism as a distinctive art movement has long stayed in the shadow of Russian art. Nowadays there is no doubt that modernism was a unique art phenomenon in Ukraine formed out of European modernism in symbiosis with traditional folk art.
The history of Ukrainian Modernism is tragic. At the beginning of the 1930’s, many leading artists became victims of the Stalinist purges and their works were either destroyed or hidden in special repositories. It was only after Ukrainian independence in 1991 that these canvases saw the light of the day again.
«In the Eye of the Storm. Modernism in Ukraine 1900’s – 1930’s» – the name of the large-scale project that would be implemented in autumn 2022. It will be the comprehensive display of Ukrainian Art from the beginning of the 20th century to be shown in the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum (Madrid, Spain).
The exhibition will comprise around 100 works from leading Ukrainian museums, as well as from Western public and private collections. The exhibition will be produced in partnership with the National Art Museum of Ukraine and other institutions.
The show will include works by Oleksandr Bogomazov, Olexandra Exter, Volodymyr and David Burliuk, Victor Palmov, Vasyl Yermуlov, Anatol Petrytsky, Vadym Meller and others.
The Ukrainian Institute will present an extensive film programme focusing on Ukrainian modernist cinematography. In addition, a comprehensive catalog will be published in English.
The curatorial group includes Dr. Konstantin Akinsha (USA/Italy), art critic and co-founder of the Foundation for the Study of the Avant-Garde, Kateryna Denysova, PhD Candidate at the Courtauld Institute of Art, and Olena Kashuba-Volvach, PhD in Art Studies, Head of the Department of Art of early 19th-20th cent. at the National Art Museum of Ukraine.
The presentation of “In the Eye of the Storm. Modernism in Ukraine 1900’s – 1930’s” was on June 15, at the Fondation Beyeler, Basel, Switzerland.

The joint organizers of the presentation are the charity foundation “Art for Victory UA” and M17 Contemporary Art Center in Kyiv.

The Fondation Beyeler oversees the art collection of Hildy and Ernst Beyeler, which features modern and tribal art as well as comprehensive holdings of works from 19th – 21st centuries.
Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museumis an art museum in Madrid, Spain, with over 1,600 paintings. The museum’s collection includes many artworks by leading artists of European and North American modernism. The museum presents art series by famous Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo painters, West artists from the 18th and 19th centuries.
National Art Museum of Ukraine is a state cultural institution with a leading collection of Ukrainian art from the Middle Ages to the present. The main aspects of the museum’s activities are the collection, study, preservation, exhibition and provision of educational services in the art field.
Ukrainian Institute is a public institution affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Its mission is to strengthen Ukraine’s international standing through the means of cultural diplomacy. The Institute facilitates international connections between people and institutions and creates opportunities for Ukraine to interact and cooperate with the world.
The Natalia Cola Foundation, established by philanthropist and arts patron Natalia Cola, was founded in 2019 to support institutions that value tradition, while championing new artists; ways of thinking and encouraging open discourse. It currently partners with The Serpentine Gallery and The Royal Academy.
“Strong & Precious” is a Ukrainian art project presenting Ukraine as a country with strong creative potential. The main idea behind “Strong & Precious” is to consolidate the wide range of Ukrainian jewellery designers for popularizing Ukrainian art traditions and presenting them on the international scene.
“Art for Victory UA”, established by the Ukrainian and international art and culture community with the aim to support and promote the existence and survival of Ukrainian culture in the current state of war conditions which threaten its very existence.
The exhibition "In the Eye of the Storm. Modernism in Ukraine 1900s-1930s", which will be on display at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemoisza in Madrid and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, is dedicated to the development of Ukrainian modernism between 1900 and 1930 in the cultural centres of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa. It is the first comprehensive exhibition of Ukrainian art from the beginning of the 20th century in leading European museums.
On June 15th at 16.00, Beyeler Fondation (Basel, Switzerland) will host a presentation of the Ukrainian project, “In the Eye of the Storm. Modernism in Ukraine 1900-1930’s”.
У музеї Thyssen-Bornemisza в Мадриді відбудеться виставка «У центрі бурі. Модернізм в Україні 1900 - 1930х». Вона стане масштабним українським проєктом за кордоном і має на меті довести самобутність українського модернізму, що довгий час перебував у тіні тогочасних російських мистецьких течій. Буде представлено близько 250 експонатів з провідних українських музеїв та державних і приватних колекцій Західної Європи.
On June 15, The Fondation Beyeler (Basel, Switzerland) hosted a presentation of the Ukrainian project «In the Eye of the Storm. Modernism in Ukraine 1900-1930s», which is scheduled for autumn 2022 at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid, Spain.

Виставка відкриється восени у Базельському музеї Fondation Beyeler, її презентація пройде 15 червня. Пізніше її покажуть у музеї Тиссена-Борнемісса (Мадрид, Іспанія).

(Українська) 15 червня, о 16:00, у Fondation Beyeler (Базель, Швейцарія) відбудеться презентація виставки «У центрі бурі. Модернізм в Україні 1900–1930-х», проведення якої заплановано на осінь 2022 року. На виставці будуть представлені близько 100 експонатів з провідних українських музеїв та державних і приватних колекцій Західної Європи. До виставки увійдуть роботи таких українських митців, як Олександр Богомазов, Олександра Екстер, Володимир та Давид Бурлюки, Михайло Бойчук, Вiктор Пальмов, та iнші. Організатором презентації українського проєкту в Fondation Beyeler виступили благодійний фонд «Art for Victory UA» та Центр сучасного мистецтва М17 у Києві.

Diesen Sommer feiert die Fondation Beyeler ihr 25-jähriges Bestehen mit der Ausstellung «Mondrian Evolution». Anhand von 89 Werken aus privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen aus Europa und den USA zeichnet die Ausstellung die beeindruckende Entwicklung Piet Mondrians vom Maler des 19. Jahrhunderts zu einem der führenden Protagonisten der Moderne nach. Auch die Sammlungspräsentation «Passagen – Landschaft, Figur und Abstraktion» beschäftigt sich mit dem Wechselverhältnis von Figuration und Abstraktion und präsentiert über 100 Werke vom Impressionismus über die klassische Moderne bis hin zur Gegenwartskunst.
