Counterforms is a large-scale project by Nazar Bilyk, consisting of works of varying scale and character, all united by a single idea that encapsulates the essence of the sculptor’s artistic practice. Bilyk explores the interplay between the external and the internal, the material and the immaterial, the mechanism of form emergence, and the construction of space. He frequently employs the language of negative volume — counterform — which, in essence, is a void from which form is born.

“A counterform is a ‘shadow synthesis’ of form, from which, in turn, emerges a ‘shadow’ analytical series, an unmanifested world of first causes.” (Nazar Bilyk)

Through sculpture, the artist narrates how an initial idea takes shape, how meaning gradually finds its form, materializing in physical space, and strives to approach the first causes of substance formation. When engaging with works from this project, the viewer, through their own perception, completes the act of creation. In this way, Bilyk examines not only plasticity but also the mechanisms of human perception. By visualizing the very structure of an image — its “reverse side” — the artist expands the viewer’s perspective, introducing new dimensions that broaden the range of meanings and enrich associative connections.
