Only by closely examining the distorted heads can one understand that beneath the outer layer lie entirely different – classical anthropomorphic forms. These are study sculptures, portraits from life of the artist’s friends and loved ones, created over the past fifteen years. Throughout this time, they remained on the shelves of the artist’s studio, and now, finally, they are captured within the confines of semi-transparent plastic. Over time, a similar process inevitably occurs in our memory. This “lamination,” as Nazar Bilyk describes it, documents personal memories and speaks to the fact that even our knowledge of a close person is always vague and incomplete. It can only be fully understood by shedding our own perceptual templates.
