Chepelyk Oksana
The project appeals to the freedom to choose identity and personal relationships. Visually, the project works with Zygmunt Bauman’s ideas of fluid modernity, when “uncertainty becomes a constant, and fluidity becomes the new constancy.”
“As a Ukrainian interdisciplinary artist, researcher, filmmaker I’m focusing on contemporary art and new technologies and their penetration into the environment in order to uncover their structure as a social space. As an architect, I create immersive environments with spatial objects that serve as screens for moving imagery, connecting theories with economic and environmental issues in order to change the anthropocentric optics and therefore come closer to the understanding of spatial relations, interactions between media flows and the human being.
As a filmmaker, I create “films-concepts” and invite audience to experience the complexities of today’s world. As the curator of the International Festival of Social Sculpture, I am interested in themes that can encourage interaction, community building, develop emancipated sensuality and sensorium. The themes that I develop are especially geared for dialogue, oriented toward communication. My artistic practices include installation, film, video, digital art, VR, painting, photography, performance, fashion, object, social sculpture, public art and eco-art.
The choice of a media depends on a project’s idea. I do art because it is the manifestation of freedom of will and spirit, creativity with a sense of responsibility. I consider my art to be political, as I work with history, science, gender, eco-art and new technology.”
Oksana Chepelyk was born in 1961 in Kyiv.
She is a leading researcher of The New Technologies Department at The Modern Art Research Institute of Ukraine, an author of the book “The Interaction of Architectural Spaces, Contemporary Art and New Technologies” (2009) and (since 2007) a curator of the IFSS – International Festival of Social Sculpture in Kiev.

From 1993 she organised 15 curatorial exhibitions (Ukraine, France, USA, Canada, Brazil, Kazakhstan and Germany), 30 solo exhibitions in Europe and America, and participated in a number of joint exhibitions (Germany, Lithuania, Ukraine, France, USA, Sweden, Croatia, Brazil, Austria, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina).
