Yuliya Wimmerlin
Знято на острові Сокотра в Ємені — одному з найбільш відлюдних і незайманих куточків планети, де природа дотепер зберігає первозданний вигляд, який майже зник з нашого світу. Відрізаний від цивілізації, острів живе за власними правилами: його печери, скелі й химерні рослини наче прийшли з іншої епохи, а сам простір дихає прадавньою тишею, що передує і людині, і часу.
Червоне склепіння печери дихає, мов жива тканина землі. Тут, у найглибших надрах, там, де закінчується цивілізація і починається первозданна матерія світу, постає світло. Не привнесене ззовні, а народжене зсередини: тіло розчиняється у сяйві, руки розкриваються, наче крила, і темрява каменю стає не могилою, а лоном.
Ця робота — частина мандрівки вглиб уяви, у простір, де реальність розчиняється у сні, а печера обертається на портал до іншого виміру. Як Аліса, що падає у власну Країну Чудес, фігура опиняється на порозі між світами, і саме там, у мінорній тиші підземелля, спалахує передчуття світанку.
У контексті проєкту-мосту Київ—Венеція ця печера стає архаїчним павільйоном без стін: простором каменю, вологи й вогню-кольору, де глядач тілесно відчуває межу між зникненням і відродженням. Мінор тут не кінець, а поріг. Темрява не відсутність, а та утроба, в якій визріває нове світло. Це жест стійкості: навіть у найглибшій пітьмі людина здатна стати джерелом сяйва.
Yuliia Wimmerlin is a Ukrainian visual artist and photographer from Kyiv, currently based in Switzerland. Working across photography and mixed media, her practice explores perception, memory, identity, and the experience of inner landscapes.
Wimmerlin began her professional career in photography in 2014, initially focusing on travel projects before shifting towards contemporary art in the early 2020s. Her works have been exhibited across Europe and North America and are held in private collections on both continents.
Approaching photography as a plastic medium rather than a documentary one, the artist combines photographic imagery with painterly logic, abstraction, and mixed media. Through colour, light, movement, distortion, and visual ambiguity, she investigates perception, memory, and the instability of reality. Bodies, landscapes, and fields of colour become fragments of an inner geography, where nature extends emotional states and the image exists between recognition and abstraction. Her work is driven by the moment when reality remains perceptible, yet its meaning has already begun to shift.

“UNCORNERED” — a portrait series depicting Ukrainian women who fled the war in their temporary homes in Switzerland, wearing the clothes they escaped in.
“Nymphs 2.0” — a contemporary reinterpretation of the historical bathing figure, where figuration dissolves through soft focus, synthetic colour, and constructed scenography.
“Stolen Language” — a project rooted in the experience of being a Russian-speaking Ukrainian, reflecting on the linguistic and cultural challenges faced by many Ukrainians since 2022.
