Black Sea Mother is a silent monument to the memory and vulnerability of the Black Sea—a body of water that continues to suffer from ongoing military aggression and the systematic destruction of its ecosystem caused by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The destruction of the Kakhovka Dam, the resulting changes in water salinity, devastating oil spills, the disappearance of entire mollusk populations, the suffering of dolphins whose echolocation has been disrupted, their mass strandings along the coast, and the widespread death of seabirds—all of these tragedies seem to fade into the background amid nightly attacks on civilian cities and the relentless violence on the front line.
Russia is waging war not only against people. Its methods spare no living being. Ecocide has become an integral part of its military strategy.
Many of these environmental tragedies remain largely unseen. Limited access to the Black Sea region makes it impossible to fully assess the scale of this global ecological disaster. Although Ukrainian media continue to report on these events, this has not been enough to shift the perspective of the international environmental community.
Global environmental movements have remained largely silent, while the countries bordering the Black Sea have shown little willingness to confront the crisis. Yet the tragedy of the Black Sea knows no borders. The environmental devastation caused by Russia’s war extends far beyond these shores, reaching into the Mediterranean Sea. The silence and inaction of neighboring maritime nations only deepen the crisis.
