Alive Light
Alive Light 2025 - 2026, vintage lamp base, SCOBY, light bulb, glass stones, 39 см
About the artwork

I completed this work at the end of August 2025. Since then, I have continued experimenting with objects made from bio-textiles that I cultivate myself. My aim was to create a soft, natural, warm light—and this lamp is where I finally achieved that effect.

In January 2026, Russia intensified its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, including in my region. We experienced weeks of widespread power outages. In my studio, temperatures remained between 1°C and 9°C throughout the day, causing my bio-textile works to freeze. This lamp suffered the most, as it had been placed on the windowsill.

Many parts of the lamp cracked, and its surface developed an unexpected crust-like texture. I evacuated my “living” lamp to my home and waited until the end of winter to restore it. By late February, I had completed the restoration, and the result proved even more beautiful than the original. The experience reminded me that everything eventually passes—even the harshest winter of the four-year full-scale Russian invasion.
