У день народження моєї дружини я дістав букет найкрасивіших тюльпанів та тістечка з найкращої в місті кондитерки. Але це не все відкриття сьогодні. В окупованому Херсоні працюють найкращі довоєнні салони краси, в яких можна зробити стрижку чи манікюр. На ключових напрямках з’явилися блокпости. Один із них розташувався навпроти мого вікна і завдає дискомфорту. Російські військові перевіряють багажники машин та зупиняють пішоходів. Деякі мають блокнотики, де, можливо, записані автономери. Судячи з розірваної та обгорілої військової вантажівки на переїзді, у них є приводи для занепокоєння. Черги по продукти порідшали. Не стільки від того, що всі вже наїлися чи побігли до салону краси, скільки від дефіциту готівки та спорожнілих складів. Найбільше людей стоять біля відділень банків, сподіваючись зняти кошти з рахунків.
Багато банківських терміналів у магазинах різко “втратили з’єднання з інтернетом” і товар продають виключно дорого за гроші, створені з грубої матерії, або, в крайньому випадку, можна розплатитися переказом на картку. Війна добре показує, хто є хто. Мені було не так боляче, коли я вперше побачив російських військових, що крокували під моїм вікном, як від численних свідчень мародерства мешканців міста. Коли армія “визволителів” заїхала, тріумфально розстрілявши мабуть бандерівський ТРЦ, “звільнені” помчали на руїни неонацизму, що тліли, за новими прасками, телевізорами, смартфонами, костюмами, елітним алкоголем і пневматичними гвинтівками. Деякі всією родиною. У цей самий час сотні людей віддавали найцінніше, що вони мають за їхню свободу і право красти праски, поки поліції немає.
Казкар теж згадував про монети. Він уже натякнув своїм шанувальникам, що монети настав час рахувати і буде туго. Свій найефектніший літературний прийом він застосував і тут: відповідальність за те, що відбувається, лежить на комусь іншому, за межами країни казок.
Mykhailo Rai was born in 1984 in Kherson, in a family of former ship’s cooks.
He graduated from the Maritime College and served at sea as a Deck Officer. In search of satisfaction, he started to engage in photography.
At first, it was nothing more than a hobby until he saw realistic digital photo collages. The ability to synthesize his own images instead of reflecting through the surrounding reality quickly captured his full attention. He finally got the right tools to recreate his inner world and transform it; thus, his interest in traditional photographic practice was finally lost. He began to discover hidden facets of his own consciousness, and this pushed him to find answers in psychology and religions.
Shortly before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, he gave up his maritime career, which he had been building for over 20 years, and intended to live a life creating art that could awaken people. On February 24, 2022, life began to challenge him. He decided to stay in Kherson, his native city, which was occupied by Russian forces, and fight for freedom with the power of his art. This decision unexpectedly brought him to the answers he was looking for: to prove that Paradise (Ray in Ukrainian) is not a place but a state of consciousness. During the occupation of Kherson, he gave interviews to BBC and a number of Ukrainian, US, and Taiwanese journalists about his art and the situation in the city, and he took part in numerous exhibitions in Ukraine, Europe, the USA, and Asia. His artworks are held in private collections in the USA, Netherlands, and Ukraine.
