Heart, from the series “Dark Times”
Heart, from the series “Dark Times” 88×63 cm, digital collage, print on fabric, hand embroidery, 2022–2023
About the artwork

The series “Dark Times” emerged during the period when Russia sought to plunge Ukraine into a total blackout in the autumn of 2022 through the winter of 2023, targeting the energy infrastructure of major cities with missile strikes.

Sacred images, surfacing from the darkness like phantoms, are layered onto fragments of contemporary satellite views of Ukrainian cities or landscapes scarred by missile attacks. These are interwoven with the textures of silver and gold foil—materials frequently seen in photographs from frontline operations. This collage-like interplay underscores symbols of sacrifice and testifies to the unbroken spirit of Ukrainians and their defenders, who continue to forge their path through the darkness of war.
